Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of just a young girl. Aunt Denise worked during the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay instantly was captivated with an old 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay was raised by an aunt who was socially conscious and taught her how to utilize the arts as a means of expression. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her life, but was able to spend summers with her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's father remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later the film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay was a college student at the time she began to become attracted to the field of production for television journalism. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage inside the house of a member of jury. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided not to continue in journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight out college, as a young publicist for a studio. She was promoted to the position and set up her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
